As we get older, fine lines and wrinkles develop due to ageing, muscle activity (over-activity) and your genetic predisposition. Premature ageing can be caused by sun exposure, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and emotional and hormonal influences.
Injectable muscle relaxants are non-surgical treatments to reduce or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. The muscle relaxant only works on the specific muscle which is causing the facial line that you want to reduce. Other muscles are not affected so your facial expression does not appear to change drastically, which it can when surgical procedures are carried out.
Botulinum toxin is used as the muscle relaxant to treat lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions, worry lines or frown lines. The overactive muscle is carefully injected with botulinum toxin which stops this muscle from contracting.
Botulinum toxin is produced by a bacteria, it is then highly refined, purified, diluted and used in therapeutic doses.
Very fine needles are used to administer the dose to the required area. A local anaesthetic is not used as if there is any discomfort it is minimal and very short-lived.
Effects of the treatment will begin to appear within 48 to 72 hours, although the full effect may not be visible for up to 10 days. In the first year the treatment will last for about 3 to 4 months, top ups can be given after this time and with regular administration in the second year the effects can last 6 months.
Marek Skalka has been specially trained in London to administer this treatment. There is no one more qualified than a dentist to carry out this procedure, not only is Mareks' knowledge of the head and neck anatomy and physiology extensive, having studied them in detail for 5 years at university, but on a daily basis he is carrying out dental injections.
If you are interested in this treatment a half hour assessment appointment will be made with Marek. At this appointment he will assess your specific needs, he will take a full medical history and facial photographs to help him with your treatment plan. You will have the opportunity to ask as many questions as you would like.
If you would like to go ahead with the treatment a second half hour appointment will be made.
