Veneers are wafer thin shells of tooth coloured porcelain "cemented" to the front surface of teeth. They improve the cosmetic appearance of the teeth by changing the colour, shape and form. Veneers can treat a single tooth or can be used for the whole arch. They are commonly used for the most rapid form of smile makeover, often seen on television programmes such as "10 years Younger".
There are a wide variety of reasons why patients opt for treatment with dental veneers:
Stained Teeth - badly stained teeth that cannot be improved by whitening techniques.
Damaged Teeth - teeth that have either become badly worn with excessive grinding or have been chipped or broken in an accident can benefit from veneers.
Gaps - spaces or diastimas between your teeth can be easily closed using dental veneers giving you a more uniform looking smile.
Crooked teeth - they can be used to give the appearance of straight teeth for those people who do not wish to go through orthodontic treatment. However we feel in most cases it would be preferable to move the teeth using orthodontics and with the advent of clear braces it doesn't have to be so daunting.
To accommodate the veneers, the dentist will have to reshape and prepare the tooth or teeth. This will be carried out under local anaesthetic. Impressions of the teeth are then taken which are sent to the technician who will cast models upon which he designs and manufactures the veneers. Temporary veneers are fitted whilst the permanent ones are being made.
Marek Skalka can offer same day veneers which are designed and manufactured at the chairside using the Cerec CAD/CAM system.
