Keeping Our Patients Safe: CPR and Medical Emergency Training at Blossomfield Dental Care

At Blossomfield Dental Care in Solihull, your safety and well-being are always at the heart of the care we provide. As part of our commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care, our team took part in our regular CPR, first aid and medical emergency training today.

Although medical emergencies are uncommon in a dental clinic, it is important that our whole team knows how to respond quickly and confidently should an emergency occur. Regular training helps us maintain these skills and ensures everyone understands their role in an emergency situation.

Why is medical emergency training important at the dentist?

You may not think of a dental clinic as somewhere where first aid or emergency care would be needed, but patients can become unwell anywhere and at any time.

A patient may experience a medical emergency for a number of reasons, whether or not it is directly related to their dental treatment. This could include someone feeling faint, experiencing an allergic reaction, choking or, in rare circumstances, suffering a cardiac arrest.

The Resuscitation Council UK guidance for primary dental care recommends that dental professionals maintain up-to-date skills in CPR, basic airway management and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), with resuscitation skills updated at least annually.

For us, this means making sure our team has the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond appropriately and calmly if a patient becomes seriously unwell.

What does CPR and first aid training involve?

Our training covers important skills that can make a difference in an emergency, including CPR and responding to a range of medical emergencies.

The team practises what to do if someone becomes unresponsive, how to provide CPR and how to use an AED. Training can also cover situations such as choking, anaphylaxis, fainting and other medical emergencies that could potentially occur in a dental setting.

Practical training is particularly important because an emergency can be stressful and fast-moving. Regular hands-on training gives the team an opportunity to practise the correct response rather than simply relying on what they remember from previous training.

Our team is prepared

Today’s training gave the Blossomfield Dental Care team the opportunity to refresh their knowledge, practise their emergency response skills and make sure everyone knows what to do should an emergency arise.

Regular training also helps ensure that our team remains prepared and confident in their individual roles, in line with General Dental Council guidance on medical emergencies.

We believe that being prepared is an important part of providing safe and reassuring dental care. While we hope our emergency training is rarely needed, knowing that our team is prepared helps us provide our patients with the highest standard of care possible.

Continuing to put patient safety first

At Blossomfield Dental Care, patient safety is about more than the treatment you receive in the dental chair. It also means making sure our team, equipment and procedures are ready to respond when they are needed.

We regularly review and refresh our training so that our team can continue to provide a safe environment for patients of all ages.
